Babel Loft is a haven.

Every inch of the place is decorated with carefully sourced furniture and art! It’s beautiful in there. A perfect environment for connecting with others, working, and relaxing. I recently taught a screenwriting course for the members and am blessed to say I solidified a community of black men and women who are interested in screenwriting, filmmaking, and directing. Excited to keep coming back as the programming expands!

“Rooted in collaboration? Built with the love and support of our collective?” That’s what the description states but the reality is, that mantra is very unlikely. I invited my friends here after the Lay Out event at Brooklyn Museum. Imagine my surprise when they were greeted at the door and told they could not get in because this place is a members’ only lounge and upstairs was at capacity.

First and foremost, I came earlier and knew the DJ so I had no issue getting in and I came downstairs to vouch for my friends. Upstairs was hardly at capacity so that was a lie. People were leaving in droves and as they exited I asked the security guard “wouldn’t it make sense as people are leaving to replace them with people waiting?” Of course they saw no logic in that and kept my friends, who were all women, waiting outside.

Secondly, I can’t imagine paying a member’s fee for a four story walk up with decrepit steps and a vibe at the top floor bar that’s reminiscent of a dive bar in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Your establishment needs to cut me a check for the calories burned and time wasted. Trying to be Dumbo House but the delivery screams try again. The rejection at the door was in poor taste and the attitude of the “ones in charge” screamed wanna-be elitism and tacky.

As I said to the door lady holding the “list,” I will never return here. There are too many places in Brooklyn that have the common sense to open their establishment in true love and collaboration and this place is not one of them.

I left two stars only because the bartender upstairs was nice to me, and he was patient. Other than that, the “manager” I spoke with was rude and the door lady, although just doing her job, was robotic and uninviting. They will not see a red cent of my hard earned money, ever
