Ok with this one you have to know what you’re getting into - no AC, and you have to pass through (formerly known as) Valle de los caídos entrance (make a reservation so guard has you on a list). In addition, the front desk service is not 24 hours. The location is also very solemn with a dark history in general and not much info available on the history of the monastery itself. So - if you’re in reflective space and enjoy nature (note that fire hazard is also real and posted as such all over), don’t mind the heat, and like easy parking, the hospedería provides a very unique and aesthetic experience. It’s also adjacent to El Escorial which is fabulous, and easy access to Madrid/airport. We did not eat there. Glad we went overall.

We came without a reservation and even though they were understaffed they kindly seated us. You wouldn't ever know they were understaffed. The service was top notch, the food healthy and delicious, and the atmosphere outstanding. I'll be back and will definitely bring friends with me. Well worth the visit. Oh, and best cheese flan I have ever, Ever, had!

You cannot fault the location. It is spectacular.
The rooms are basic and they need a good update. Where they let themselves down is I regards to food and hospitality. The food is very basic, no choice and is not cooked freshly. When at dinner we could hear the microwave hum and ping. Breakfast was a very rudimentary affair. This has to tempered with the very reasonable price paid. If we visit again however,u less we can see that something has changed well be dining out. The buildings themselves are incredible. You have to keep reminding yourself that these are less than 80 years old. The built quality is starting to show and there are numerous remedial works on going. So all in all good value for basic accommodation. The basilica is absolutely incredible! But you have to bear in mind its history.

We spent a night at the Hospedería Santa Cruz back at the beginning of June. Found the place fascinating, beautiful building former Monastery in the middle of a National Park with a unique view to the mausoleum of The Valley of the Fallen, erected to honor all the lives lost in the Spanish Civil War. The place is full of history, accommodations are simple but adequate. They have a dining room where you can eat good and simple food for a modic price. The staff is friendly and helpful, they showed us the beautiful library that is not regularly open to the general public. There was an eerie feeling to be so close to Madrid but surrounded by mountains and silence.

Very reasonable accommodation in a tranquil and gorgeous setting. Decent-sized rooms, most with great views. Friendly and helpful staff. Note that your booking at the Hospederia saves you the 9 Euro entrance to the Valle de los Caidos park. The Hospederia has free Wifi in the reception area, along with several large comfortable sofas. Breakfast is basic, although the coffee is decent. Would not hesitate to stay there again.

Quite good, traditional, home-made, locally sourced food and wine! The staff are excellent and provide wonderful service. The buildings and surroundings are beautiful! It's worth a visit if you're in Madrid or Avila.

This is the worse place I have stayed in, I booked a superior room, what I got was a soulless, bare, uninviting place to spend as little time in as possible.||Nothing of comfort to be had, no mirror, hairdryer, nasty cheap sachet of shower gel, not even a bottle of water to be seen. Damp patches on walls, basic furniture that was once used by monks, and now they are charging good money for it.||When I spoke to the manager he said " we don't have any stars" then they shouldn't portray it as if it has.||Pictures on line show a nice modern bathroom, what we got was a horrible old one that I couldn't Bare to shower in, and it's supposed to be a superior room.Do not stay here if you want to relax and enjoy a nice meal and a good night's sleep, this is for people who are looking to experience staying in a monastery, it most certainly wasn't portrayed like that online . Restaurant and public areas are unheated and so cold you have to keep your coat on, having travelled from UK on the ferry overnight then driven for 5 hours this is not the experience I needed.||

An unsurpassable location. Over looking the Cross of The Valley of The Fallen.||You get free entry to the basilica if you stay here.||The Dinner and Breakfast are tasty and plentiful- you don’t choose but that’s ok as it’s part of the charm.||The rooms are comfortable , clean and quiet.||Yes it’s a wee bit shabby in places but it’s old, it’s a working retreat, it’s lovely!||Stay somewhere else? Maybe, but you’ll have lost out massively!
